Alex Yee: Now is My Time For Olympic Glory

Alex Yee believes the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris are his best chance for individual glory – but is hesitant to put too much pressure on himself.

Yee, who came second in Tokyo finishing behind Kristian Blummenfelt, has made the Olympics his primary focus in 2024.

Speaking to Adam Leitch for the latest episode of the Face to Face series for the Super League Triathlon Podcast, he said: “I don’t want to put much pressure on it, but yeah, definitely it is the best opportunity I have, and the best shape and the best position I have been in going into an Olympic year.

“Six months is still a long time, and there’s still a lot of things you need to get right to be able to stand on that start line and be like yes, I have a really good opportunity to race to the best of my ability and say everything has gone right.

“I think for me that’s what I’m going to focus on for the next few months, just making sure I am, first of all, enjoying what I am doing in training but also making sure I will be standing on that start line saying ‘yeah, I have given myself the best chance to race to the best of my ability and whatever position I achieve from this, whether it is 50th, second, first, I have really achieved it because I have worked hard and executed a race plan.”

Yee also talks about the difficulties of setting out his race calendar in a sport that is now starting to offer lots of different opportunities to its top athletes.

He said: “I think it’s still very hard to plan and to be able to race your best for a whole year and kind of race so much as well. We start with the arena games in February time and then you can finish like last year as late as the end of November.

“So, yes, it’s hard to plan for. I can’t lie. And I think sometimes I make mistakes, sometimes you get it right. But I think it’s all about trial and error and just learning from each year.”

Alex also reflects on:

  • His upbringing

  • How quickly he became a top triathlete

  • His hunger for more success

  • The need to have fun when training
