Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand Both Qualify For Supertri E Final
The world’s top two female triathletes made it into the final of the supertri E World Triathlon Championship powered by Zwift - but there was a big name casualty in qualifying.
Both Cassandre Beaugrand and Beth Potter eased through their heats to book their place in tonight’s finals at the London Aquatic Centre. They are joined by American star Katie Zaferes.
However, Britain’s Rio Olympic medallist Vicky Holland missed out.
Heat 1
Tanja Neubert and Cassandre Beaugrand got themselves out in front on Stage 1 and then extended their advantage in Stage 2 to qualify automatically with a bit to spare.
The German and the French stars were able to move into cruise control by the final run with a comfortable advantage over Julia Brӧcker and Vicky Holland, who was in contention after Stage 1 but missed her start for Stage 2 and fell further back and didn’t make it through as a fastest loser, though Brӧcker did.
Heat 2
In a heat missing Fanni Szalai, who couldn’t start because of injury, Beth Potter and Lena Meißner made it safely through, leading from start to finish.
It was Meißner who got out of the first swim just ahead of Potter, but the World Champion overtook her almost immediately and they then pulled further and further away. They finished in that order with Potter clocking the fastest qualifying time of the day.
Two of the fastest losers came out of the heat with both Petra Kurikova and Barbara De Koning making it to the finals.
Heat 3
Katie Zaferes utterly dominated, destroying her opposition with a victory of more than 30 seconds. It was a gun to tape victory over the two stages.
The battle for the second automatic qualification spot was a close-run thing between Britain’s Annabel Morton and Germany’s Marlene Gomez-Göggel. It went one way then the other before Gomez-Göggel made her way through in Stage 2 and held on to get to the finals automatically, but Morton’s efforts were good enough to qualify her as a fastest loser.
