Supertri League Explained: Formats, Rules, Teams & Prize Money

What Is Supertri League?

Supertri League brings the world’s best athletes to iconic, spectator-friendly locations and to screens around the world through its innovative broadcasting. It fuses the excitement of sprint-distance racing while rewarding those who value technique and tactics.

Supertri League sets itself apart from traditional triathlon with its three, fast-paced stages. Each stage sees athletes complete a 300m swim, 4km bike and 1.6km run. There are two different formats to Supertri League racing: the standard Supertri format and Supertri Eliminator.

It stands distinct from all others due to its relentless intensity and the value of pushing your body to its absolute limit. It is a series that runs in collaboration with our elite athletes to redefine the future of triathlon and has delivered several successful events to date.

“Every second counts” has never rang so true. The fastest legs are rewarded and gain you an advantage; but with eight transitions instead of the standard two, mistakes between disciplines are punished. The rapid change between disciplines provides an exciting spectacle for fans, but also tests competitors’ fitness and tactical know-how.

The Supertri League features three rounds plus the Grand Final, with additional points on offer for the finale. There are both men’s and women’s individual categories, but athletes are not just competing for themselves, they are competing for their squad in the Teams League.

There are four teams fighting for the crown and the prize pool on offer, and for the 2025 season these are: Brownlee Racing, Stars and Stripes Racing, Crown Racing and Podium Racing.

Race Formats: Supertri vs. Supertri Eliminator

Supertri Format

This is the standard Supertri League racing format: three stages of 300m swim, 4km bike and 1.6km run without any breaks.

Supertri Eliminator Format

This format will return in Toronto this season, with the other three rounds of the Supertri League 2025 contested over the Supertri format.

While the Supertri format has no breaks, the Eliminator provides a short break between each of the three stages, allowing athletes to reset their equipment. However, in a big twist the last two athletes to cross the finish line at the end of Stage 1 and 2, will be eliminated. For Stage 3, the remaining athletes will have their times combined from those first two stages to determine the starting order for the Pursuit Start.

The Pursuit Start sets athletes off in order of their accumulated times, providing a time advantage for the quickest in the field. This also provides an incentive for athletes to pick up every second in the first two stages to make their job easier in Stage 3.

Why Supertri Is Different: Fast, Tactical, Relentless

The balance between risk and reward is delicate in Supertri. For the bold, you can receive advantages. For those too daring, it can lead to an early exit from the competition.

Short Chute

The Short Chute is the ultimate opportunity to change the fortune of your race – allowing you to take a shortcut on your final run. But there’s a caveat – not everyone can take the Short Chute and even if you earn it, you are not guaranteed to be granted that advantage.

While an athlete may earn this, the Team Manager for each team decides which of their athletes can take the short chute.

The Short Chute is awarded to the first athletes across the Mount Line – where the transition area ends – after their first swim and bike. It is also awarded to the first across the Dismount Line – the start of the transition area – after their first run (or across the Finish Line for the Eliminator).

90 Second Rule

The 90 Second Rule means all athletes who fall more than 90 seconds behind the leader on each lap, will be eliminated. This is measured on each lap at the Mount Line and is enforced to prevent Lapping, and is present in all formats.

It shows the delicate balance between working hard at the start; and running out of energy further into the race. There’s a fine line between hero and zero if you do not pace yourself correctly.

Points System: How Athletes and Teams Compete

League

In the three regular rounds, points are given to the top 15 athletes from each round from 15 for the winner, down to 1 for 15th place. For the Grand Final, the top four athletes are awarded 20, 18, 16 and 14 respectively. From fifth to 15th, points are distributed from 12 to 2.

The best two scores from the three regular rounds, plus their score from the final, will contribute to the athlete’s total.

Supertri Discipline Leagues

There are also Leagues for the quickest swimmers, cyclists and runners across the series. This is determined by the time of the first or second swim, bike or run of the day. The top three athletes in each discipline are awarded 4, 2 and 1 points.

The winners of the Swim League, Bike League and Run League, receive a cash bonus too. While these points do not count towards the individual contest, they do count towards the Teams League.

Teams

All points accrued by athletes – including in the Swim, Bike and Run Leagues – count towards the Teams League.

Tiebreaker

In the case of a tie in the Supertri League or Teams League; the athlete or team with the best result in the final race of the League will finish ahead.
